Essay Topic

4. What are the uses/limits of the internet in terms of politics and/or democracy? Should we rethink the nature of the political? What happens to the nation/state in the age of networks that have the potential to span the whole planet? What has happened to the idea of "community" in the age of networked digital media? Discuss with an example.

Decided to go with this topic as I remember a case a couple years back in New Zealand where they used a wiki and allowed public editing for some certain laws. Here. and here. The link to the actual Wiki it self is naturally down as its run its course but the completed 'final' version is still available on the policeact website, here. This will be my centerpiece to my argument, not as to say its proof that such things don't work (I do remember it being vandalized quite heavily) but more as a proof of concept. That in an age of near instant communication anywhere in the world that we should rethink our democratic process to allow for more input from the masses instead of of a pure representation democracy. It could be interesting to go back to the traditional form of democracy .
